THE SYN/RGY LAB
Appalachian State University’s Synergy Lab is a print studio that works to support students and faculty in exploring and producing innovative work and ideas. After relocating to East Hall during renovations in 2024, the lab is preparing to return to a newly upgraded Wey Hall, along with a fresh rebrand.

Working alongside colleague Geovanna De La Torre Trujillo, the new identity aims to be both futuristic and grounded in the lab’s roots in traditional printing, creating an inviting space that draws more students in.

Goals for the rebrand:

  • Position the lab has a more inviting and approachable space.
  • Create a visual identity that aligns with the current lab’s need and values.
  • Establish a system that could be easily adapted by anyone working within the identity.

The updated typeface feels more approachable and lively, while the new icon reflects the lab’s focus on creativity, flexibility, and growth. Together, the logo now helps communicates that this is a space for students to explore, experiment, and combine ideas, and express those ideas without pressure or intimidation.

The use of the slash replacing the “e” in the original “Synergy” highlights the lab’s focuses on digital/physical learning and making, as well as to symbolize the act of leaving East Hall behind.

From the start, this rebrand was shaped by close collaboration with Addison Brown, the Lab’s print technician. Through a series of meetings and iterative feedback, my colleague Geovanna and I worked together to clarify and better understand what the lab’s needs and priority’s were.

The client expressed that the previous identity felt difficult to maintain, both visually and practically, so our end goal was to create a system that felt both aligned with his vision and easy to implement without further guidance. The result is a refreshed identity that’s flexible, approachable, and built to last.
